Art-A-Thon Challenge!!

November 17th, 2008 (08:15 am)

Good morning to you all!

Last week, Katgirl Studio started the Art-a-thon Challenge. It's a daily blog of all things art, but it's more than that too... It's also a space for any artist to join up and post art 5 days a week.

That's right... anyone.

Blogger apparently allows multiple people to post to a single blog, which is the magic intertube technomancy which allows this feat to happen. The goal here is to get a huge raft of people to join and post their art regularly, providing a near-constant stream of fresh art for the rest of the world to peruse. Yes, it's a daring, interesting, creative project, full of potential wonderment and joy... what else would you expect from Katgirl Studio?

Now, you might be wondering why is Aleric pimping this blog for someone else? What happened to the self-serving pessimistic misanthrope that we've come to demand comics and art from? Fear not, loyal watchers, for Aleric has also joined up! (And it was stupid-easy, too... I was shocked) Drop in to the Art-a-thon Challenge. There will exclusive art over there, things that I won't always share on HHFM, Devart, or Facebook. I'll also likely be posting some musings that are unrelated to any of the above.

Additionally, if you're an artist and want to join in the madness, email Kat and let her know! She'll sign you up and you can challenge yourself to join the madness today! Oh yeah, be sure to read the rules. They're not difficult, I promise. SEE YOU THERE!

HHFM turns 100, and other things of note.

Welcome to comic #100!!

Yes, it's certainly a small milestone, but it's an important one, to be sure. We've officially made it through 100 comics and not a single missed update (ok, one little glitch, but we're not counting that... it was a technical error).

Today's comic is a tribute to one of HHFM's big fans, Johnny Fransden. Cartoonists can tend to live in a vacuum, not hearing too often from fans, or only hearing from people obligated to read your comic... you know... family and friends. He was the first person to send me a fan-mail, and I was shocked when I got it. Up until then, I didn't have any true evidence that people actually read Hell Has Found Me. Chaos Kitty was his idea, and I've been kicking around ideas on how to bring him in. Johnny is also the creator of the HHFM Fan Club over on Facebook, and has been a constant reminder of how great fans can be. Every time I start to feel down about the comic, or really most things, I remind myself that there are fans out there, like Johnny, who do more than tolerate my sense of humor.

Thank you Johnny, and all the rest of you fans out there. Go sign up for the facebook group, say 'hi!' to Johnny, and then share it (and Hell Has Found Me) with your friends!

In other news, the 44th U.S. President has been selected. I've tried pretty hard to keep politics out of the comic and the news posts, because I know how alienating it can be when your favorite webcomic suddenly dives into political commentary. That said, if you're not interested, go on and skip down, because I'm going to chat for a bit.

Barack Obama is an inspiring figure, and I've followed the race closely over the last 2 years, not long after Clinton, Obama and Edwards (among others) announced their candidacy. This year is the first time I've ever seriously considered volunteering for a campaign, however: I ultimately decided against it.

I come from Republican roots. My grandparents and parents come from the so-called "bible-belt", the Mid-western United States. I believe I have a strong moral upbringing, initially based (I feel) in some of the best ideas of the Christian faith. I've also come to recognize that what I value in people no longer fully matches any established Religion. In the years that I grew up and began thinking for myself, I became more and more moderate. I recognize the madness and insanity of both the far right and the far left. My beliefs and values match with some of both sides of the aisle. What scares me the most about these election cycles are the crazy, insane things that are said, the bent truths and outright lies that each party seems to be willing to perpetrate against each other.

Ultimately, I voted for Obama, not because he was Democrat, or because his campaign seemed more honest, or because he seemed more stable, cool and collected than McCain. I didn't vote for him because he seemed to have fewer insane political zealots rooting and working for him. These were contributing factors, I assure you, but not the only reasons. I voted for Obama because he spoke to what I value. He spoke of hope, with the firm conviction that with hard work, with calm dignity, with thoughtful planning and reasoned action, we can rise above where we have been. He seems to believe that if we help our neighbors out, if we're willing to sacrifice a little time, a little effort for each other, we will ultimately help ourselves. That if we demonstrate that something can be done, we will inspire others to do it themselves. I share that conviction, and I feel that if more people share that vision, we will make the United States  the place our parents and grandparents spoke about. We will make it the land of opportunity, of prosperity and of fairness that it should be.

I'm glad that Obama has won the presidency, and I look forward to working towards a better United States of America.

That said, I'll go ahead and remind you all to VOTE! There's a new PDQ which went up Monday.

Thanks to all,
Aleric

Ifni was kind enough to include the rebuke email that was not sent to me.

Normally, I don't get sucked sucked into these false positives, and I apologize to those who use me as a source of general de-bunking goodness.

That said:

I do strongly support [edit: the total burning destruction and death of] CA Prop 8. Don't let Californians take away other people's rights.

Edit
Gah. ok, I guess I wasn't fully paying attention. thanks, Terra.

My friend, tristinmorgan posted a rather frightening letter she received on her blog.

You can see it behind the cut.
Crazy misinformed email.Collapse )

These propagandist internet letters bother me on so many levels, not the least of which is how they weave enough truth into it to make the fiction seem real. They engage in the Wizard's First Rule: "People are stupid, and will believe a lie, because they fear it may be true".

In Germany, when Hitler came to power, it was a time of terrible financial depression.
Not true. Hitler converted the German Worker’s Party into the Nazi Party on July 29 1921, a decade before the Great Depression. He was elected head of the party by a vote of 543 to 1.

Money was worth nothing. In Germany people lost homes and jobs, just like in the American Depression in the 1930s, which we have read about in Thoene's Shiloh books. In those days, in my homeland, Adolph Hitler was elected to power by promising 'Change.' He blamed the 'Zionists' around the world for all our problems. He told everyone it was greedy Zionist Bankers who had caused every problem we had. He promised when he was leader, the greedy Zionist bankers would be punished. The Zionists, he promised, would be wiped off the face of the earth.
At the time, Germany was suffering the economic repercussions of losing World War I (the Treaty of Versailles), and the people needed to blame someone, the Jews were an easy scapegoat, due to their general financial well-being. Hitler was impressed by the German Worker’s Party founder, Anton Drexler, and his anti-semetic, nationalist, anti-capitalist, and anti-Marxist ideas. 10 years later, after Hitler had written Mein Kamfp, had served 5 years in prison for high treason, Hitler worked to bring Nazi Party back to power. He further pushed against the Treaty of Versailles, the wounded national pride, and blamed the (arguably) harsh terms of the Treaty on “international Jewry”.

So Hitler was elected to power by only 1/3 the popular vote. A coalition of other political parties in parliament made him supreme leader. Then, when he was leader, he disgraced and expelled everyone in parliament who did not go along with him.
Not true either, Hitler was never elected, aside from the near-unanimous internal party vote in 1921. In 1930, when the Great Depression hit, Germany’s political and economic turmoil gave Hitler the chance to rebuild the Nazi party into the largest political party in Germany, meaning they had the most seats in Parliament. It just so happened to be a mere 1/3 of all the seats. The current Chancellor of Germany (Papen) was removed by an 84% vote of no confidence by the Parliament. The still seated President of Germany named Hitler as Chancellor. Some deft political maneuvering ensued, careful placement of high-ranking officials and then the burning of the Reichstag, and subsequent blaming it on Communists. Basic rights were removed, including habeas corpus, all the while the Nazi party campaigned for more seats in Parliament, using tactics including paramilitary violence, anti-communist hysteria, and government resources to publish propaganda. By 1932, Hitler’s Nazi Party had formed an alliance with the German National People’s Party, giving him a majority in Parliament and securing his grab for power, the elimination of more rights and his dictatorial, top-down leadership.

What began with the propaganda of children singing a catchy tune ended in the deaths of millions of children.
Wrong. The Hitler Youth were actually teenagers recruited into the Nazi party, preparing them for the “Storm Regiment” an adult paramilitary wing of the Nazi party. After Hitler was brought to power did the Nazi party lower the recruitment age for Hitler Youth to 10 and make attendance mandatory.

Then there are the right wing fear mongering that’s going on, tying the Nazi Party to ANYONE in American politics is wrong.

EDUCATE YOURSELF:

Obama doesn’t want to abandon or kill people with disabilities
Obama doesn’t think one faith is better than another
Obama doesn’t promote hate and fear as a major party platform
Obama doesn’t want to kill unborn children or give government control over women’s bodies or how their morals guide them to live.

This idea that a politician should try to get your vote based on fear, on hate, on how different “they” are from “us”, attempting to breed mistrust, paranoia, and worse, is something we should all, as Americans, be able to rise above and look beyond. We’re better than this. We are one AMERICAN people, a people who need to regain our sense of national pride, to do it without the specter of fear or paranoia, the darkness of hate and mistrust. We need to become proud of our neighbors, of ourselves, to understand that fighting for the rights of our neighbors and friends is standing up and fighting for ourselves.

I guarantee you this: I will NEVER vote for someone who promotes hate and fear, someone who rattles their saber or the saber of the American military might for political gain. I will never vote for someone who advocates taking away another American’s rights, regardless of their race, color, creed, religion, gender, who they gain comfort and love from, or any other factor that makes them different from me.

Please feel free to share this.

Being Present.

October 20th, 2008 (03:39 pm)
contemplative

current mood: contemplative

I've been struggling.
I have too much baggage, and too many hopes. I finally realized last night that my focus on the past and the future is too distracting. It's self-destructive.

Looking to the future at the expense of the present turns both to ashes. The future will never turn out exactly like you hope, and you must ultimately adjust your expectations to be content. In the end you feel you're shortchanging yourself, and that only lends itself to being bitter, upset, hateful, angry or hurt.

Living in the past causes you to neglect the present. You either regret what has happened or what opportunities you have missed or you long for days which grow more golden and rosier as they days pass. In one case you end up angry and bitter of what is no longer available, and in the other, you neglect the present for something you can never have again.

With the Future perpetually out of reach and the Past firmly locked against us returning to it, we are only left with the Present.

I'm not saying don't prepare for your future. I'm not saying, 'don't lay plans for what may happen or work towards goals'. I am saying that laying your happiness to rest with what might be is to deny what is in front of you. It is saying that today becomes worthless when looking through the glass to tomorrow. That concept is something I'm coming to reject, as often, tomorrow remains perpetually out of reach, and forever poisoning the present.

I'm also not saying to ignore the past entirely. The past is what has brought us to this point, it is what made us who we are, has shaped our beliefs and ideas. The past is a part of us and to deny it would be to deny ourselves. Just don't let the past rule you, because as soon as you do, the past will weaken the strength of the Present, force it to become secondary and will color every action, every belief, every thought that we have in the present, ultimately forcing us to relive the past over and over again.

This is where we should live. Now. This moment. This hour. Today. This week. This month. This year. It is in the present that the happiest moments of your life happen. Sadness is the result of looking into the past. This idea won't be easy to live by, and I'm certain it's not an original idea... but I think it may be a worthy goal.

No on 8.

I posted this some time ago:
and I think it's about time to post it again.

Feel free to post this in your own journals and blogs.

10 reasons Gay Marriage is wrong:

1. Being gay is not natural. And as you know Americans have always rejected unnatural things like eyeglasses, polyester, and air conditioning.

2. Gay marriage will encourage people to be gay
, in the same way that hanging around tall people will make you tall.

3. Legalizing gay marriage will open the door to all kinds of crazy behavior. People may even wish to marry their pets because, as you know, a dog has legal standing and can sign a marriage contract.

4. Straight marriage has been around a long time and hasn't changed at all; women are still property, blacks still can't marry whites, and divorce is still illegal.

5. Straight marriage will be less meaningful if gay marriage were allowed.
The sanctity of Britany Spears' 55-hour just-for-fun marriage would be destroyed.

6. Straight marriages are valid because they produce children.
Gay couples, infertile couples, and old people shouldn't be allowed to marry because our orphanages aren't full yet, and the world needs more children.

7. Obviously gay parents will raise gay children,
since straight parents only raise straight children.

8. Gay marriage is not supported by religion. In a theocracy like ours, the values of one religion are imposed on the entire country. That's why we have only one religion in America.

9. Children can never succeed without a male and a female role model at home. That's why we as a society expressly forbid single parents to raise children.

10. Gay marriage will change the foundation of society
; we could never adapt to new social norms. Just like we haven't adapted to cars, the service-sector economy, or longer life spans.

Con -x-treme report

September 3rd, 2008 (08:19 am)
chipper

current mood: chipper
current song: Techno

I spent more than a few days thinking about how I was going to report on Con-X-Treme. At first, I was angry enough to be ready to write a scathing report, exposing the ugly underside and inner workings of a Con Gone Wrong. Then, something happened, or, more correctly, I realized what had actually happened.

You see, while I was at the con sitting in the dealers room, between drawing 2 PDQs, almost finishing a major inking project, and drawing several other quick sketches, I got to spend a few hours watching my fellow exhibitors. One of them was the physical embodiment of the Gloom Fairy. He walked around the con, complaining, grumbling, and generally spreading hate and discontent. Oh, don't get me wrong: He spent some time reading a book, more time napping, but when he spoke, he framed his complaints as jokes or poking fun at this or that, and it seemed that he wanted to make sure that everyone else was as unhappy as him. When he ran out of things to condemn about the con, his focus smoothly shifted to customers, then to guests of honor, then other cons… it seemed that nothing would be spared his scorn.

What I realized was, I don't want to be that guy. So, contrary to my initial outrage-fed instinct, I'll actually say this about the con: There were so many helpful and interested staffers, and they were earnest and honest, doing their best to do right by us vendors, artists and guests. Additionally, I met some fantastic people, including Jen of Juror2. She sells the most amusing stick-figure shirts and clothes, all silkscreened by hand. Also Joey Jordan of Joey's Realm. I also wanted to send a big "Hello" to animangame and deviant69beauty, both from Deviantart!

The fantastic times I had at Con-X-Treme are because of YOU (and several other people that stopped by to say hello), so thank you for making the con the best you could, and I hope that I helped make yours just as memorable.

In other news, I've signed up for Silicon from 10-3 through 10-5, and I'm looking at the possibility of doing Steam Powered, a steampunk convention on Halloween! Either way, I'll keep you updated!

If anyone has been following along on the HHFM Facebook group, you might have heard something a little different was going to be happening on my comic. The result?  A Hell Has Found Me parody of the brilliant "Boot To The Head". Of course, I hear you ask "But Aleric, isn't that rather long to make into a parody? I don't want to have to read it for a whole month!" Well you see, that's where the second part of this "something different" comes in.

You see, many of the cartoonists I see online seem to have this idea that on their birthday, they get to take a break. Well screw that, I say! It's MY birthday and I'm going to give you all the present of me working a little harder for you!! For the next two weeks, Hell Has Found Me is going to a 5-day/week update schedule!!

Yes, you heard me right. 5 days per week, for the next 2 weeks. Happy Birthday!

The Dr. Demento show and the albums that they released are just some of the many influences I've had throughout my life, and I'll admit that they have probably been one of the greater contributing factors to my particularly demented sense of humor… so this is a little of me giving back and sharing the love with the rest of the world.  So please enjoy the next two weeks of comics over at Hell Has Found Me!

Reading

July 24th, 2008 (10:01 am)
busy

current mood: busy

I've been reading a lot of books lately. I get into these cycles where I just devour books. I'll read 3 or 5 (or more) of them. It’ll take me a few days to maybe a week for each, then I'll dramatically slow down reading. I haven't figured out what does slow me down. Whether it's a matter of me not being interested in that particular story, or if it's some strange circadian rhythm that has something to with the phase of the moon, the distance of the apogee of object 90376 in the Oort Cloud, whether my kitty Crash sneezed within the last week, or just what.

During my voracious reading period, the act of reading each of these books goes the same: the first third of the book or so, I read fairly slowly. It takes me 2-3 days to read it. The second third of the book, I'm usually quite engaged, and read it during my spare time: lunches, afternoons; this usually lasts a day or two. The final third of the book I do nothing else but read. Work suffers, food can wait, the Katgirl gets a little neglected, even sleep is put off for hours.

It's almost physically painful to pull myself away from these fleeting obsessions. I can't imagine how addicts start the road to recovery from more serious substances than books.

Still, the above is the reason that you only get zombie line art on my Deviantart feed, and I'm late in putting up the webcomic news and blog posts. For that, I apologize. If it makes you feel any better, I feel terribly guilty and plan on drowning the guilt in a tall glass of cold beer and some tasty chicken casserole tonight… in between putting editorial comments on a commissioned short story, painting another speed paint of Myen and the People, and working on 3 comics.

Yes, when I feel guilty, I make good food and work harder.
Aleric

PS! I'm going on vacation from July 26 through August 4th. Don't worry, there will be regular comic updates over at Hell Has Found Me (remember, I'm more than a month ahead on strips), but if you're lucky, I might come back with some REALLY cool stuff. Just don't count on relevant or regular news updates.
